A Journey to Uhum and Asraf Villages in the Nurata Mountains

Day 1 – Day 1: Samarkand/Bukhara - Ukhum Village

Start your journey at 9:00 AM from either Samarkand or Bukhara by transport. Upon arrival in Uhum village, enjoy a traditional lunch before setting out to explore. In the afternoon, take a guided walk around the village, visit the mosque, and observe the daily lives of the locals with insights from your guide. Then, head to Hayot village to explore the juniper forests (alxar) in the Nurata reserve, taking in the stunning scenery and learning more about local traditions. In the evening, return to your guesthouse for a hands-on cooking masterclass, where you will prepare osh (pilaf) alongside local hosts. Enjoy the meal together before settling in for the night.

Day 2 – Day 2: Ukhum-Asraf Village

After breakfast, pack your belongings and begin your journey to Asraf village. With the help of a local guide, donkeys will carry your luggage along the scenic 12 km (7.5 miles) route. Along the way, you will pass a water mill, walk 2 km (1.2 miles) along a stream, and climb through the mountains. As you travel through five villages, take in breathtaking views of Aydar Lake and discover the region’s unique flora and fauna. Upon arrival in Asraf village, relax at a guesthouse surrounded by natural beauty. Unwind in the spacious courtyard under the shade of trees, either on a tapchan (raised platform) or at a table, and enjoy a delicious lunch. In the afternoon, explore the village, meet the residents, and visit landmarks such as the 1,100-year-old mulberry tree, ancient petroglyphs, and traditional houses. In the evening, return to your guesthouse for a traditional dinner before resting for the night, bringing your immersive journey through the Nurata Mountains to a peaceful close.

Day 3 – Day 3: Asraf Village – Aydar Yurt Camp

Wake up to the serene surroundings of Asraf village and enjoy a hearty traditional breakfast. After packing your belongings, set off on your journey to Aydar Yurt Camp, an authentic nomadic experience near Aydar Lake. Upon arrival, settle into your yurt and soak in the peaceful desert atmosphere. After lunch, take a leisurely stroll around the camp, learning about the nomadic lifestyle and traditions. In the afternoon, embark on a camel ride across the sandy landscape, experiencing the rhythm of the desert just as the nomads have for centuries. As the sun sets, gather around the campfire, where you can listen to Kazakh folk music and stories from local hosts. Enjoy a traditional dinner under the star-filled sky before spending the night in your cozy yurt.

Day 4 – Day 4: Aydar Yurt Camp – Bukhara/Samarkand

Start your morning with a refreshing walk around the desert, enjoying the tranquil beauty of the landscape as the sun rises. After breakfast, visit Aydar Lake, where you can relax by the water and, if conditions allow, take a dip or observe the local birdlife. By mid-morning, begin your journey towards Bukhara/Samarkand, traveling through the vast steppe with occasional stops to admire the scenery. Arrive in Bukhara/Samarkand in the late afternoon, where you can continue exploring one of Uzbekistan’s most historic and enchanting cities.
